Feeding Guidelines
Feeding Your Cat(s)
Cats are strict carnivores, and meat is essential for their health. Many dry cat foods are predominantly grain with flavor-enhancing agents—cats wouldn’t even think of eating grain if it wasn’t flavored! Viand, however, doesn’t need flavoring since it’s predominantly meat.
Because cats are creatures of habit, they often resist dietary improvements. Viand has no sugar, flavor enhancers or coloring to persuade finicky cats. It derives its flavor from meat, garlic and other natural ingredients.
To transition your cat to Viand, gradually reduce the amount fed of the current diet while increasing the Viand. Start by adding 1/2 to 1 teaspoon of Viand Feline Formula and daily increase its amount while decreasing the amount of the old food. Do this over 10 days to allow your cat to adjust to a higher level of nutrition.
The total amount you need to feed daily depends on the weight, activity level and metabolism of the cat. As a rule, a mature 8- to 12-pound cat consumes between 1/4 and 1/3 cups of food daily. A kitten (up to 24 months) and a pregnant cat both eat 75-100% more food than an adult.
Feed your cat once or twice a day. Do not leave food out to permit nibbling, as this has been found to negatively alter your cat’s metabolism and can lead to an abnormally high urine pH. This can make the cat predisposed to the formation of urine crystals.
Viand Feline Formula is formulated to help prevent F.U.S. and cystitis. The high percentage of quality meat protein and the low bulk formulation produces a natural pH in the urine. The bioavailability and high digestibility of ingredients results in low ash and low magnesium consumption.
Though Viand is considered a full feed and a balanced diet surpassing all AAFCO and NRC requirements, the addition of raw meat and vegetables into a daily menu make the diet even more vital and beneficial. Daily, try to feed 1/8 cup of raw meat, a small amount of vegetables and 1/8 cup of Viand Feline Formula. This is a guideline and larger felines as would smaller felines' amounts would vary. If your cat does not take to the natural diet right away, be patient. You may need to cook the meat a little at first to release the flavor.
You can even help your cat’s diet while you are deciding whether to switch foods. Begin today to add some whole/raw foods to your cat’s diet. Raw chicken, turkey or fish will usually start your cat in the right nutritional direction. Beef is often not a cat’s favorite, but try it anyway.
Don’t worry if your cat is not interested in vegetables or the Viand in the beginning and only goes for the meat. Your cat is making up for long-term nutritional deficiencies.
A better diet will help your cat’s immune system begin a more sustained and deeper cleansing process. This allows the expression of higher wellness through greater vitality and a stronger inner balance.
